Ask Your Coach: What if my business requires more of me?
Topic of your Question: Business / Fear of success
Ask Your Question:
I’m a physician building a private practice, and I’ve noticed that I hesitate whenever it’s time to promote my services. I find myself revising plans that are already sound rather than moving forward. I want the practice to grow, but I’m concerned that increased demand will compromise the quality of care I provide and leave little room for my own well-being. How do I move forward without committing to more than I can reasonably manage?
ANSWER:
Think about one recent moment when you were ready to promote your practice and decided to revise your plans instead. What was the sentence in your mind right before you stopped? Write it down in quotations.
Can you name the emotion you feel when that sentence - the one in quotations - goes through your mind? Get specific. Is it fear, pressure, dread, or something else?
What do you do when you feel that way? What do you avoid doing? Just notice - don't try to change anything.
Are you pre-judging yourself for losing some of the quality of care you provide? Why?
What have you already decided about your hours, patient capacity, and availability? Have you tried to grow before? What judgments are you making about yourself - what does it meant that it didn't work? What did work? What can you tweak to work more efficiently?
Do you regard yourself to be capable of growing your capacity to solve problems? Do you regard your practice to have the capacity to be flexible when something doesn't work the first time? Do you regard your patients to be capable of comprehending transparent transitions or change?
Imagine your practice grows and you honor the limits you’ve chosen. Does that feel different from the success you’ve been picturing? Why?
What benefit do you get from revising your plans? Is this a pattern you notice elsewhere in your life?
Where did you first learn that quality of care is compromised when demand increases? When did you first learn that your own well-being would get sacrificed if you don't get it exactly right the first time? When did you first learn that more cannot be reasonably managed?
If your practice skipped all the busywork and transformed into your ultimate dream practice tomorrow, what is the worst that could happen? How does that feel? Are you able to find a solution for it? Do you want to? This is one of my favorite topics to coach on - I have an entire workshop built just for this. If you were taught to suppress your joy (don't laugh too loud - don't smile too big, sit down, calm down) and hide your money (someone might rob you, keep that to yourself, don't show off), you are the perfect client for Joy and Money where we learn to open ourselves back up to hold more joy and we practice receiving and keeping more money. It's an 8 hour intensive that you will walk away changed forever.
